Runner sizing is one width rule and one length rule — and most returns in the category come from buyers guessing both. Publish the chart, stock two lengths, and the guesswork (and the return line) disappears.
The width rule
A runner should cover about one-third of the table's width, never more than half:

Wider than half and the runner reads as a narrow tablecloth; narrower than a quarter and it reads as a ribbon. The layering relationship with cloths is in cloth vs runner.
The length rule
Dining tables: runner ends 15-25 cm short of each table edge — the float is what makes it a runner. Coffee and console tables: overhang is the look, 20-30 cm drape per end.

Why do coffee tables break the dining rule?

Do textured runners change the math?
Not the numbers, but the perception: tasseled and knotted-openwork runners visually extend beyond their cloth length by the tassel drop (8-12 cm). Measure and list cloth length excluding tassels, and note tassel drop separately — the mismatch between the two is a quiet return driver. How should listings state sizes?
Cloth length × width in cm and inches, tassel drop separate, plus one sentence of table fit ("fits 140-180 cm dining tables with float"). One line of fit language converts better than a paragraph of adjectives — the same discipline the handbag size chart applies to bags.
