A carton of "UV protection" hats arrives at your shop. The hangtag says UPF 50+. You ask the supplier for the lab report — silence. This is the most common gap in the sun-hat category: a claim printed on a tag that no one can back up with a fabric test. For a small wholesale buyer stocking resort shops or garden centers, an unverifiable UV claim is a reputation risk.

What is UPF — and why is it not SPF?

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rates fabric. It measures how much UVA and UVB radiation passes through a textile to the skin underneath. UPF 50+ means the fabric blocks at least 98% of UV rays.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rates sunscreen applied to skin and addresses only UVB. A hat does not carry an SPF rating. If a supplier's marketing says "SPF hat," they are either imprecise or reselling someone else's copy. Correct the term before you print your own listing.

What raises — and lowers — a fabric's UPF rating?

Several fabric properties determine where a hat lands on the UPF scale:

  • Weave density. Tighter weave blocks more UV. Hold the fabric to a lamp: visible pinholes between the yarns are gaps UV passes through.
  • Fiber type. Polyester and nylon absorb more UV than untreated cotton or linen. A polyester bucket hat typically outperforms a cotton one of the same weight.
  • Fabric weight (GSM). Heavier fabric generally blocks more. A 220 GSM cotton blocks more than a 120 GSM cotton in the same weave.
  • Color. Darker and brighter colors — black, navy, red — absorb more UV than pale pastels or white.
  • UV-absorbing finishes. Chemical treatments can boost UPF significantly but can wash out over repeated laundering. Ask whether the quoted UPF applies before or after washing.

Factors that lower UPF in real-world use:

  1. Stretch. A hat pulled tight across a large head opens the weave and reduces effective UPF.
  2. Wet fabric. Cotton especially loses substantial UPF when damp.
  3. Straw with visible gaps. Open weave between straw strands looks beachy but lets UV through. Lined straw or paper-braid with a fabric underlayer performs better.
  4. Openwork and lace. Decorative cutouts are UV holes — they negate any UPF rating on the surrounding panels.

How to verify UPF claims before you commit

You do not need a lab to run a first-pass check. Hold the hat fabric against a bright desk lamp or a window with strong daylight. A hat claiming UPF 50+ should let almost no light through — comparable to a heavy cotton t-shirt folded once. Compare it side by side with an ordinary cotton cap: if both show the same density of pinholes, the UPF 50+ claim is suspect.

This desk test catches flagrant overclaims, but the real verification is documentation. Request a third-party lab report naming the UV transmission test method — AATCC 183 or ASTM D6603 are the recognized standards for textile UV testing. The report must name the same fabric you are buying: same fiber content, same weight, same construction. A test for a "sibling" fabric is not evidence for the hat in your carton.

If a supplier cannot produce this report, treat the UPF claim as marketing copy. On your own labeling, follow a working rule: never print a medical claim such as "prevents skin cancer." Say the fabric is rated UPF 50+ and blocks 98%+ of UV per the named test method, and keep the report on file.

How much does brim geometry actually protect?

UPF rates the fabric, but a hat's shape determines which skin gets shaded. Brim width is the second most important spec.
