Bag and Accessory QC: Zipper, Stitching and Hardware Checks Before You Pay

Textile QC gets the burn tests and GSM checks — but bags, hats and accessories fail in different places: zippers, stitching, hardware and straps. A crossbody bag with a stiff zipper or a tote with single-stitched handles comes back to your shop as returns and bad reviews, no matter how good the fabric looked in photos. This is the inspection routine small importers can run themselves on a sample or a delivered carton, in about twenty minutes per style.

The Five-Point Checklist

#CheckPass standardFail sign
1Zipper cycle test20 open/close cycles, smooth both directions, auto-lock slider holdsCatching, wave in tape, slider drifts open
2Stitch density (SPI)7-9 stitches per inch on seams; 4-6 on decorative topstitchLoose, skipping or uneven stitches; raw seam ends
3Hardware platingEven color, no bubbles or dull patches; magnet test = base metal under plateGreen/white corrosion spots, plating flakes at edges
4Strap and handle loadHang loaded to 2× expected carry weight for 10 min; no seam creepBartack pulls, webbing narrows, rivet rotates
5Lining and interiorLining sewn in, not glued; pockets finished; no loose threadsGlued lining edges lifting, pocket mouths raw

Point 1-3 apply to nearly every SKU in the accessories assortment: the anti-theft quilted crossbody lives and dies by its zipper; the bangle and cuff line by plating quality alone.

Zipper Detail: What to Look For

  • Cycle it fast. Slow, careful zipping hides defects. Zip at customer speed, 20 cycles, both directions, including around curves.
  • Check the tape. The fabric tape should lie flat with no ripple — ripple means the tape was sewn under tension and will pucker worse after washing.
  • Test the auto-lock. On most garment-grade sliders, pulling gently against a half-open zipper should not move the slider. Sliders that drift open are the #1 return cause for phone bags like our mini knitted phone bag.
  • Ask the supplier which zipper brand the sample used (SBS and YKK are the common quality marks) and confirm production matches the sample — a classic bait-and-switch point.

Stitching: SPI and the Bartack

Stitches per inch is the single number that predicts seam life:

  • Under 5 SPI on load seams = decorative-grade construction on a working bag. Reject.
  • Bartacks (the dense zigzag blocks at strap anchors) must exist at every stress point: strap ends, handle bases, pocket corners. Count them — a missing bartack is invisible in product photos.
  • Thread should match or intentionally contrast, but never show skipped stitches — run a fingernail along the seam; snags find skips.

For textile items the seam logic continues into our textile QC guide (burn test, colorfastness, GSM) — bags and linens share a supplier audit, so run both checklists on the same sample day.

Hardware: Plating and Salt

Plated hardware fails by corroding, and corrosion starts before the customer sees it:

  • Visual: even tone, no milky haze (haze = thin plating), no rough edges at holes.
  • Magnet: a strong pull means steel base under plating — acceptable for buckles, watch for it on "brass-finish" pieces priced like solid brass.
  • Salt proxy: leave a piece on a damp windowsill for 72 hours. Any spotting = the plating will fail in a beach bag within a season — critical for the straw beach bag line and foldable beach totes.
  • Nickel compliance: earrings, ear cuffs and prolonged-skin-contact items should be nickel-free or nickel-below-limit for sensitive-skin markets — our tarnish-free jewelry care guide covers why this drives returns.

Where QC Fits the Order Workflow

  1. Pre-production sample: run the full five points before approving — the sampling workflow is in our small-batch sourcing guide.
  2. In-line check: for orders over 100 pieces, ask for photos of the first 10% off the line, zippers cycled.
  3. Final carton audit: open 10% of cartons on arrival, run points 1 and 3 (the two that degrade in transit), document with photos before signing any claim window closed.
  4. Supplier scorecard: log fails by type. Two consecutive zipper failures on a style = change the supplier or the slider spec, not the batch.

Valvive supports sample-first ordering from a 3-piece minimum, so the five-point checklist costs one sample bag and twenty minutes before a full order commits — quotes in 1-2 days, DDP shipping to the US, and QC photos available on request before shipment.
