The one rule that covers 80% of the catalog: coatings die in heat. Hot water, hot dryers and hot irons all crack or delaminate the wipe-clean layer of a pvc waterproof oilproof tablecloth — the cloth still works, but the wipe-clean promise is gone and the customer calls it defective.
Stain Treatment by Stain Type
Act before the stain sets; every hour costs recovery rate.
- Oil and grease (latkes, cheese, dressing): dish soap directly on the spot, work in with a soft brush, wait 10 minutes, then wash cold. For coated cloths, a wipe with soap within the hour usually suffices — that is the coating doing its job, per our wipe-clean tablecloth guide.
- Red wine and juice: blot (never rub), then salt or club soda on true cotton; on polyester, pretreat with a little detergent and wash cold. Rubbing drives pigment into weave.
- Coffee and tea: cold flush from the back of the fabric, then normal wash — heat sets tannin stains, so never put an untreated cloth in the dryer.
- Candle wax: freeze or ice-bag the wax, snap off the bulk, then iron the residue out between two paper bags on low — except on coated cloths, where you scrape and wipe instead of ironing.
- Frosting and food coloring: the sugar washes out cold; the dye needs an oxygen-based stain remover soak before the wash cycle.
Bleach, Colorfastness and the Jar-Wash Rule
Chlorine bleach strips prints and yellows PVC — oxygen bleach only, and only on whites. Before you trust any colored cloth to a wash program, run the same jar wash test importers use on samples: hot water plus detergent in a sealed jar with a white strip for 30 minutes; if the white strip stays white, the color is locked. Wrinkles, Storage and Fleet Discipline
- Wrinkle fix without an iron: tumble 10 minutes on low with a damp towel, then hang immediately — safe for every class including coatings.
- Storage: clean, fully dry, folded loose in a breathable bin. Damp storage breeds mildew on absorbent weaves; the reason rental fleets favor PVC-coated stock, as covered in our event rental inventory guide.
- Fleet rotation: commercial launders should retire a cloth at first coating crackle — a compromised coating stains permanently at the next event. Buying at the 230 GSM class extends wash life materially.
